Next month’s Australian PGA Championship has added another major drawcard to its field with 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie set to tee up on the Gold Coast from the 3rd of December.
Scotsman, Lawrie is the first of the big name Europeans to sign on for the co-sanctioned tournament, which will also have the richest prize purse on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Lawrie has competed in Australia on three previous occasions, all in European Tour co-sanctioned tournaments, but this will be his first trip to the Gold Coast and the Australian PGA Championship.
“I am delighted to be returning to Australia, whilst I have been back on a few occasions for some corporate commitments, I haven’t competitively played there since 2005,” said Lawrie.
“I have heard wonderful reports about the fun to be had on the Gold Coast as well as the relaxed atmosphere of the Australian PGA Championship. I’m looking forward to experiencing it for myself,”
A player the calibre of Lawrie, who has 8 European Tour victories on his resume, is a bonus for not only Australian golf fans but also his fellow competing Professionals.
“We are delighted to welcome Paul Lawrie to the Gold Coast. Having a Major champion and two-time Ryder Cup representative in the field is a real coup,” said Brian Thorburn CEO of the PGA of Australia.
“Lawrie’s talents are sure to excite golf fans who make the trip to the Gold Coast or watch live on Channel 7.”
“It also provides the young Australian’s in the field an opportunity to witness how a Major champion goes about their business at a key tournament.”
The Australian PGA Championship will be played at RACV Royal Pines Resort from 3-6 December. Australia’s richest golf tournament in 2015, the Australian PGA Championship is being played for AU$1.75million and co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour.
Tickets for the tournament are now on sale at www.ticketek.com.au with children 16 years and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Discounts are also available for members of RACV and affiliated motoring clubs as well as for Gold Coast residents.
The Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as well as the City of Gold Coast and Gold Coast Tourism proudly supports the Championship.
