Aiming

When average players approach the ball they tend to aim their body before placing the club on the ground. They get their feet in place and then put the club down. This has two general consequences.

  1. The right-handed player tends to aim to the right (opposite for lefties) 2. They are standing too close to the ball. This usually results in the weight rocking back onto the heels which leads to an ‘off balance’ swing often tending to be a ‘reverse pivot’ leading to a consistent slice.

It is quite interesting to see the results with a pupil when we spend time working on the set up before worrying about the swing. Many times the swing problems of the pupil disappear with simple corrections to their method of addressing the ball. The top players aim the clubface first and then set everything else up to that.

If the clubface is pointing at the target then the feet line in general should be parallel to that, as should shoulders, hips and knees. The average player stands too close to the ball. Get yourself a little space so your weight can be toward the balls of your feet and you will have better balance through the swing.
